Welcome

Rachel

My name's Rachel and I run Wayfaring Therapy, a counselling practice based in East Lothian. I offer both in-person and remote sessions.

I am an experienced and fully certified counsellor, supporting people from a range of backgrounds on a variety of issues.

People come to counselling for all kinds of reasons, but common themes are feeling lost, hopeless, or overwhelmed. My sessions can help you unburden yourself from repetitive negative thoughts, feel listened to, and instil confidence in yourself.

Sessions

Each session lasts for 50 minutes. They are usually weekly, but I’m happy to discuss the option of fortnightly sessions. I'm available weekdays and two evenings a week.

Before we start sessions, I offer a free 30 minute phone call to answer any questions you might have. This is also an opportunity for you to decide if I’m the right counsellor for you. The therapeutic relationship is a vital aspect of the work, and your sense of comfort and trust in me is important.

During our first session, we'll go through a privacy policy, confidentiality statement and counselling agreement. We'll also discuss how many sessions you might like to have. Don’t worry if you’re unsure about this – we’ll have regular review sessions to discuss this and check in on how you’re finding the counselling.

After this, the space is yours to talk about what's been on your mind and how you’ve been feeling. It’s helpful to think about what you might like to focus on in advance, but this is not a requirement. Some people don’t know what they’ll talk about until they sit down.

Fees

  • In-person: £55 per session
  • Remote: £50 per session
  • Concessions: I offer a reduced fee of £45 per session for students. I can also offer a discount for unpaid carers and people with a reduced income – please let me know if this is the case for you.

About me

I have worked in mental health for ten years, and practised counselling for five. I've supported people experiencing issues such as depression, anxiety, bereavement, low self-esteem and trauma, and people impacted by a sudden and unexpected change such as ill-health, job loss, or relationship breakdown.

I started Wayfaring Therapy so I could work outside the confines of a time-limited service, giving clients more autonomy to navigate their thoughts and feelings at their own pace. The name comes from the Wayfaring Tree – a welcome sign that you are near a path for those who are lost in the woods.

How I practise

I work within the framework of the person-centred conditions, which means creating a non-judgmental environment and offering empathy and compassion to my clients. This setting nurtures trust, growth, and change. I also use psychodynamic theory to help explore thought patterns, feelings, and the relational experience between myself and clients.

In our sessions together, I will meet you where you are and work with what you bring to each session. I will sit with you within the emotions you’re feeling and help you to make sense of your thoughts.
